Options for Students with DisabilitiesDear Student, Welcome to MVCC and the beginning of your first semester as a college student - a time of great excitement and opportunity. Before long, you will have settled into campus life, but the first semester can be a difficult one for new students and the challenges can start even before the semester begins! Completing all of the required paperwork, placement testing, scheduling and registering for classes - all of these tasks can be confusing and overwhelming at times. The college Orientation and Scheduling program described elsewhere in this mailing is designed to help students through the scheduling and registration process, and the many MVCC staff members involved do an excellent job. If you chose to attend this event, I'm sure you will agree. [Option #1] However, as a student with a disability, you have another option, designed to increase the likelihood that your transition to college life will be a smooth and successful one. As you will see on the list of placement testing dates enclosed in this mailing, there are many possible dates from which to choose. For current high school seniors, testing in your high school may be another option, if there is someone there who is able to administer the test. In either case, once testing is completed, you will be able to sign up to attend one of the two Office for Services to Students with Disabilities STEP* programs described below. [Option #2]
*STEP is the Summer Transition Enhancement Program, an Orientation and Scheduling opportunity designed to help you make the challenging transition described above. Participants will learn about the college environment and the services available to them at MVCC, but the major focus will be on providing you with the information you will need to be a successful college student who just happens to have a disability. You will also have the opportunity to schedule an appointment to meet with an academic advisor who will help you select the classes you will take your first semester as a college student. The identical programs are on Tuesday, July 12 and Thursday, August 4, and will run from 9:30 am to 3:00 p.m. To select Option #2, or for more information on the STEP Program or anything else in this letter, please call OSSD Coordinator, Lynn Igoe, at (315) 792-5413, or Learning Disabilities Specialist, Wendy Dowsland, at (315) 731-5702.
