Strategic Horizon Network

Anti-Racism and Advancing Inclusive Excellence

Beyond the current COVID-19 pandemic, the year 2020 has brought racial and social unrest not seen in the country for nearly 50 years. It is a moment that the nine-member Strategic Horizon Network will not let pass. Undeterred by the constraints of the pandemic, the November colloquium provides a laser focus on anti-racism and inclusive excellence to expand our individual and collective perspectives and inspire a call for institutional action beyond our current efforts.

All SHN member colleges have made tremendous strides in our student success work and, through intentional efforts, have made early strides in creating more inclusive organizational cultures. However, we must continue to stretch our thinking and find ways to push the conversations about systemic racism and dimensions of inclusion to a place where deep personal and institutional change can occur. Community colleges pride ourselves on responding to the needs of our communities and the current social unrest is an opportunity of our institutions to step into this space and model the way for others and ourselves that moves our students, faculty, staff, and local communities toward a more anti-racist and systemically inclusive reality.

Learning Objectives

Upon Colloquium's end, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the various elements that make social mobility important.
  2. Compare and contrast what it means to be non-racist versus anti-racist.
  3. Analyze behaviors that are informed by implicit bias and how to disrupt them.
  4. Understand the dimensions of equity and how to advance it on campus.

Description:

Description: The Adirondack team will present three different initiatives that demonstrate deeper partnerships with our community, resulting in improved services to students. You'll learn about the college's lead role in creating the Partnership for Community Belonging whose mission is to "...work with multiple organizations to support a diverse, inclusive and equitable community that creates a strong sense of belonging for all who work, live, and play here". You'll learn about the creative ways we've been able to scale up mental health and wellness services for our students, and a new "earn and learn" program that benefits our students and the local hospitality industry.

Description: Upskill Amarillo is Amarillo College's newest workforce development initiative that helps students build the skills employers value and need both locally and globally. Upskill Amarillo offers instructor-led and self-paced "sprints" designed to connect Digital + Human Skills. Students are offered unparalleled support, including success coaches & mentors, networking with industry experts, financial assistance, and connection with AC social workers, mental health counseling, and tutoring. Sprints are available for full-stack software development, cloud computing, data analytics, cybersecurity, and project management.

Description: Butler County Community College's vision is to serve its region as "The community's college." Not exactly unique, right? But the college has leveraged this vision to impact curriculum, fund raising, student services, governmental support and so much more. Learn from college leaders on how BC3 operationalizes this vision. Strategies, tactics and examples will be shared.

Description: Community colleges that achieve excellent labor market outcomes do more: Their leaders develop a vision that maximizes the college's potential to promote social mobility and develop talent within the regional economy, rooted in a full understanding of the demographic and economic contexts in which they operate." (Aspen Workforce Playbook). Along with local economic development partner, Team NEO, leadership at LCCC developed a 5-part micro-credential training designed to introduce student affairs professionals to a highly localized economic overview, including talent gaps, high-growth sectors of work, and the strongest opportunities for graduates to earn a family-sustaining wage in northeast Ohio. This work is now the catalyst for institutional transformation efforts aligned with LCCC's "Career by Design" framework. This session will provide a glimpse into the experience of the 41 advisors, career counselors, and outreach specialists who earned the Career Designer badge, and share how this work is enhancing student support services at LCCC.

Description: At the SHN virtual colloquium last year, Dr. Richard Alfred encouraged community colleges to develop as many scenarios as possible and "scare the hell out of yourself" because half of them will become reality in the next five years. MVCC has developed several compelling scenarios as part of their strategic planning process and distilled them down to theories of action to guide and inform current organizational strategy.

Description: Mott Community College's Workforce Promise is a first of its kind program where the college promises industry that students who participate in this program will be successful employees, in both technical and employability skills, or the college will retrain them for free in identified areas of improvement.

Description: Participants will learn about the Montgomery College Institute for Part-Time Faculty Engagement and Support, winner of the 2022 Delphi Award presented by the Pullias Center for Higher Education at USC. The Institute was recognized for its innovative programs and structure to provide resources to part-time faculty but also for engaging the faculty in the leadership and delivery of student success initiatives that have resulted in improved student outcomes. It serves as a model for attracting and retaining excellent part-time faculty members.
